The Forgotten Manipuri women

Did you know that on 11 July 2004, a 32-year-old woman named Thangjam Manorama was apparently picked up and brutally raped by members of the Assam Rifles? They were also alleged of pumping her vagina with bullets.

Soon after that, a group of Manipuri women marched naked in Imphal city carrying banners which said “Indian Army Rape us”.

To be honest I had no clue that such a thing ever happened in India where a set of brave women went to such an extent to protest against the government. And I am sure that there are many more like me who are totally unaware of this historic happening.

I am not going to talk about the event now, I won’t tell you what happened after that. To solve that purpose, I have attached a few links in the end where you can read about the entire episode.

I don’t want to take any side. I just want to appreciate the courage of these women. It takes guts to strip naked in front of so many people and to protest for someone who is not even related to you by birth. These women went against all odds to fight for justice and for what they truly believed in. It is so unfortunate that so many of us don’t even know about them.

Also, Thangjam Manorama has still not got justice. Her case is still waiting for a verdict. I hope that the efforts, sacrifices, and pain that these women went through doesn’t go in vain. May the truth be out soon.

P.s. You can refer to the links attached below to know more about what happened back then.

Thangjam Manorama will have to wait in line for justice, her situation may be addressed sometime in future when the media and the government has run out of news that they can use for TRP or to gain votes. After all its not like she was an actress of a famous serial or daughter of someone famous.
